Smart Maths

How does Maths look at Furley Park Primary Academy?

Here at Furley Park, we follow the SMART maths curriculum which is an innovative and creative approach to teaching and learning fluency within mathematics. SMART maths uses concrete objects (the cup) which we can then use as a starting point for children to understand all aspects of the National Curriculum. This scheme of work has been carefully planned to incorporate a constant repetition of skills and knowledge from previous learning and follows the same learning system from Foundation Stage all the way up to Year 6

Below is the link to the website and also the documentation to each year groups progressions ladders which show a step-by-step outline of what will be taught in each year group, throughout the year.

Mental Maths

Mental maths is an important part of the curriculum. Having confidence in areas such as multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction can have a positive impact on children’s maths progress and can enable them to work quicker and more efficiently with number. We make sure that the children are constantly working on mental strategies throughout their school life and hopefully they will find new, easier ways to find answers at a much quicker rate.

Times Tables

As part of our working week, we like to challenge the children to move up in their times tables.

Ideally, we would like all children to know their times tables up to 12×12 by the middle of year 4 so that they have a solid basis of knowledge to use during their everyday maths lessons. Our times tables system caters for all abilities and allows children to earn times tables badges, in an array of different colours, along the way – please see below:

Times Tables Rock Stars

To further support the development of times tables for our pupils, the school use Times Tables Rock Stars. This allows for the children to have access to fun times tables games online at school and at home. The link to the website is below:

Active Maths

Here at Furley Park, we try to make our maths lessons as active and memorable as possible. Our teachers are specialists at including activities which get all children involved and engaged in their learning. We use cards, dice, flippy counters and a whole host of other resources during our maths lessons which help with the children’s fluency of number.

We also use resources from Teach Active: Active Maths. This provides us with maths activities which can be used in all year groups, inside the classroom or outdoors. We also have our own mascot; Motty!

Motty is part of our assemblies and encourages us to challenge ourselves with our maths work.

When your class is chosen to have Motty for the week, this means that you and your class need to do some active maths in the classroom, on the playground or even on our school field!
